International Law in the Biden Administration: Expectations (A Fletcher School Event on January 22, 2021 at 9AM ET)

During the past four years, the United States has adopted an explicit “America First” policy that often resulted in “America alone.” International cooperation at the United Nations, on climate change, on Iran nuclear policy, at the World Health Organization, and at the World Trade Organization, and on many other issues, all receded under the Trump administration. Issues such as the US. relationship with the International Criminal Court, the U.S. policy on targeted killing and detention, the Iran nuclear deal and beyond (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, New START, Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons), global health law post-COVID, and the scope of presidential power in the making and unmaking of U.S. security commitments may all be reconsidered.

President-Elect Biden will have different policies, but we cannot expect a simple return to the prior status quo.

Join us as we discuss early indications and expectations about changes that will take place in the Biden administration, with some of Fletcher’s leading experts on international law:

  • Dean Rachel Kyte, moderator
  • Prof. Antonia Chayes
  • Prof. Tom Dannenbaum
  • Prof. Michael Glennon
  • Prof. Ian Johnstone
  • Prof. Joel Trachtman

TLA's Racial Disparities in the Legal Profession -- Great Event and Great Way to Go Into Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

On January 13, 2021, Tufts Lawyers Association's Public Interest & Social Justice Committee planned a virtual webinar on Racial Disparities in the Legal Profession: Retaining, Advancing, and Developing Attorneys of ColorThe program with over 230 registrants was hosted by TLA board member, Andre Baynes, and included an amazing slate of speakers including:

  • Hon. Eric Washington, A76, Senior Judge District of Columbia Court of Appeals
  • Lisa Radcliffe, J88, Deputy Chief Counsel, US Department of Homeland Security
  • Mitchell Robinson, A07, Baker & Hostetler LLP
  • Koro Nuri, A93, International Finance Corporation
The speakers talked about their varying experiences at Tufts to champion for change, diversity, equity, and inclusion. This included protests -- both on-campus and in the greater Boston community.  They discussed about the importance of sponsors in career development (looking out for sponsors and serving as a sponsor / ally for professional development.  All speakers talked about attorneys of color pursuing sponsors who understand them and work actively to develop their progression.

From a firm/corporate/governmental entity standpoint, the panel emphasized that it was essential for the intentional actions and plans to come from the top of the organization.  Diversity, equity, and inclusion should be a strong consideration at every level of an organization and be part of performance reviews/evaluations.  Accountability and reporting, although often a challenge, produces results.

A key takeaway and call to action from the seminar was to engage in intentional and purposeful action to recruit, retain, advance, and develop attorneys of color in the legal profession.  That message to create a plan / mission statement was a great way for the TLA to enter into the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.

TLA and its Public Interest & Social Justice Committee will take on that challenge to create a plan to see what we can do as an organization to recruit, retain, advance, and develop attorneys of color who are Tufts students/alumni and in the greater legal community.  If you are interested in helping TLA develop this plan, reach out to Andre Baynes, Co-Chair Public Interest & Social Justice Committee and/or Tom Dunn, TLA President.

If you were unable to attend the program on January 13th, don't worry -- it was recorded.  We will share the recording within the next few weeks.  Below are two screenshots from the program.  Thank you to our excellent host and speakers.  We are motivated to continue in TLA's programs, education, and conversations to confront and eliminate #racialdisparities.

Special Note TLA Received From Tufts Alumni Regarding Tonight's Program - Racial Disparities in the Legal Profession (Jan. 13, 2021 @6PM)

As I opened up my email this morning, I was welcomed with an inspiring note from three Tufts Alumni to the Tufts Lawyers Association regarding tonight's event, Racial Disparities in the Legal Profession: Retaining, Advancing and Developing Attorneys of Color.

The email reads:

Thomas Dunn, TLA President,

Dear Thomas,

The three of us, Milton K. Brown, Cynthia Burns Polk, and Robert H. Kelley, are 1970 graduates of Tufts University.  We signed up for the seminar titled "Racial Disparities in the Legal Profession" because, as three African-American lawyers, we are well aware of such disparities.

When we first met each other in the Fall of 1966, we were well aware of the many disparities that existed throughout our Nation.  That led us to combine our individual fights for civil rights and equal access to liberty and justice for all into a combined effort.  Our combined effort included our being founding members of the Tufts Afro-American Society and the Afro-American Cultural Center (now called the Africana Center).

Fifty-five years after we first met, we can rejoice to see that causes we fought for have been successfully passed along to succeeding graduating classes and generations of Jumbos who, along the way, have added succeeding generations of important related issues and causes.

Milton K. Brown

Cynthia Burns Polk

Robert H. Kelley

TLA, led by its Public Interest and Social Justice Committee on these issues, is so appreciative of the efforts and progress obtained by our fellow Jumbos and we are honored to continue these discussions to encourage meaningful dialogue, awareness, and change.

We are happy to report that we have over 230 registrants for tonight's program.  There is still time to REGISTER
