International Law in the Biden Administration: Expectations (A Fletcher School Event on January 22, 2021 at 9AM ET)

During the past four years, the United States has adopted an explicit “America First” policy that often resulted in “America alone.” International cooperation at the United Nations, on climate change, on Iran nuclear policy, at the World Health Organization, and at the World Trade Organization, and on many other issues, all receded under the Trump administration. Issues such as the US. relationship with the International Criminal Court, the U.S. policy on targeted killing and detention, the Iran nuclear deal and beyond (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, New START, Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons), global health law post-COVID, and the scope of presidential power in the making and unmaking of U.S. security commitments may all be reconsidered. 

President-Elect Biden will have different policies, but we cannot expect a simple return to the prior status quo.
